Finding Your Season

There’s a theory, most often used in women’s fashion blogs, that uses the idea of “seasons” to match skin tone to clothing color palette. The idea is that each person has a skin tone that is complemented by a specific set of colors.

For example, I have a warm golden tone to my skin with rosy undertones, brown hair, and brown eyes placing me into the autumn spectrum of this theory. Because of that, colors that may look good on someone with a cooler, paler skin tone may not look as good on me, even if the outfit itself is cohesive.

Instead, outfits that feature mustard, khaki, burgundy, brown, and olive green tend match my features.

There are plenty of season skin tone quizzes online, so I won’t link one here. Of course, be careful providing any personal information online. If a quiz asks you to upload a photo or sign up for a newsletter, think twice before submitting.

Color theory is a real science, as many of us learned in elementary school. However, it’s not a hard rule when it comes to picking an outfit. And although I will be indicating in each post which season is best suited for the outfit I’m sharing, keep in mind that these are guidelines only. There are professional style consultants out there that can help, but I am not one (as of writing this post).

Seasonal color theory is sort of like personality tests. It can reveal some aspects of yourself, but it should be taken with a grain of salt. There are variables like health and sun exposure and even time of year that can subtly shift skin tone.

Don’t get caught up in obsessing over finding your season. Instead, be bold in trying new outfits and styles and learn what you like and don’t like. As long as you wear it with confidence, people will take note.
